The RRSA supports education establishments throughout the UK to embed children’s human rights in their ethos and culture. The award recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of practice, and is based on principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation.
The achievement was recognised recently during the visit of Lord Ouseley, who is a strong campaigner of equal rights.
Louise Wolsey, Executive Director of Corporate and Strategic Development at London South East Colleges says: “We are very excited to be awarded the first stage of this influential award and are now looking forward to strengthening our commitment to young people’s rights, helping students make informed decisions and empower themselves to become active citizens.
“Other schools have reported a positive impact on relationships and well-being, leading to better learning and behaviour, improved academic standards and a reduction in bullying. We aim to create a similar impact at London South East Colleges as we progress to completion of the RRSA.”
From an initial audit carried out for the Recognition of Commitment it was found that the College’s policies make reference to students’ rights and adults’ responsibilities in realising those rights, but more needs to be done to embrace the UNCRC and the articles within it.
Work is now underway to achieve Level 1, which is awarded to show good progress towards embedding children’s rights in the College’s policy, practice and ethos, and good promotion of the knowledge and understanding of the UNCRC.
