In August, Julia will board a plane taking her to the state of Oklahoma, USA where she will attend the University of Tulsa studying Business Management. She will also represent the university as a member of their women’s rowing squad after being head-hunted and offered a full scholarship.

“It’s both exciting and a bit scary at the same time,” says Julia, “just a couple of years ago, I would never have believed that things could take off for me like this.

“Both of my passions have been brought together nicely. I can progress without having to worry too much about how many hours I need to spend training versus studying because I’ll be in a place that expects success for both in equal measure. This is exactly what I need right now.”

Julia would like to represent Team GB at rowing and has ambitions to compete in the 2024 Olympic Games. She is also very keen on graduating with a first class degree and then progressing to a Masters at Harvard.

Ultimately, the 18 year-old from Catford in south London would like to run a successful business and develop her own popular brand of sports clothing and equipment. Before this, she will gain employment and aims to build up a significant amount of experience in the sector as a business analyst.

She continues: “Since joining the College in 2016, I have progressed through the various stages of my diploma course, taken part in the magnificent Career Ready programme that provided me with my own personal business mentor, a six-week paid internship with Aviva Insurance, and transformed from being a shy and inexperienced school-leaver into a confident and strong-willed young woman with a very positive outlook in life. My ambitions have increased and I can see lots of possibilities and opportunities ahead. This is what London South East Colleges has done for me; it has given me vision and enabled me to see more clearly the road ahead.”
