Makita UK is the foremost manufacturer of power tools in the world. With over one hundred years in the tool manufacturing business, their products are renowned for excellent performance and quality. On Friday 27 April, their representative, Neil Botley arrived to show students a number of different power tools and demonstrate how to use them safely and achieve the best results.
A range of different theoretical and practical sessions enabled the students to learn various aspects of workplace safety such as common hazards, industry health and safety legislation and the use of personal protection equipment (PPE).
Later, students put their newly acquired knowledge and skills into practice. They were set a number of tests based on certain scenarios and situations that could put themselves and others at risk. Students were asked to identify potential hazards and were given items such as goggles, ear defenders, masks and gloves to reduce the possible risks. They were also shown how to prepare their work space before beginning the tasks at hand.
Carpentry apprentice, Edward Hall was amongst the group receiving the specialist training. He said: “Today’s training has been very interesting and enlightening. I’ve learnt some new tricks that I haven’t come across before.
“Each week at work I am asked to produce photographs and make notes about safety procedures on-site, and keep a health and safety portfolio. Nobody is allowed to use or even handle power tools at the College or at work unless they have undergone this training and now I have this under my belt.”
