The BR6 team, led by head chef Jason Main, joined a number of other eateries at the ‘Flavours of Orpington’ event – which showcased and celebrated the choice and quality of food in the town.
On the Friday evening, students prepared and served a buffet to visitors which included BBQ pulled pork sandwiches and waffles with ice cream. In addition, Jason did some cookery demonstrations, showing visitors how to prepare gin-cured salmon and slow braised pork belly.
The following evening saw BR6 hosting a special dinner for the Mayor of Bromley’s nominated charities, at which over £500 was raised.
Head of London South East Colleges’ Hospitality, Food and Enterprise Career College, Gary Farrelly, said: “The ‘Flavours of Orpington’ food festival was a perfect opportunity for our students to practice their catering and hospitality skills. They did really well on both evenings and remained calm under pressure when things got busy!
“Orpington is certainly strengthening its restaurant offer and it was great to see so many businesses come together to celebrate good food and drink, with music and comedy.
“Our own student-led BR6 Restaurant and Bakehouse continues to go from strength to strength. Our students are getting first-hand experience of the industry, whilst gaining qualifications – and this will make them huge assets to future employers. I am grateful to everyone who supports BR6 and look forward to many more exciting events.”
BR6 opened in 2014 and is the centrepiece of London South East Colleges’ Hospitality, Food and Enterprise Career College. Students at the college benefit from an employer-led curriculum, which prepares them for a wide range of exciting careers within the expanding hospitality industry.
As a fully commercial operation, BR6 provides an ideal training ground for students – giving them the opportunity to prepare and serve food to paying customers, while also learning how to run a restaurant business.
Student Daisy Bentley (19) from Orpington is studying for her Level 3 qualification in Professional Cookery. She was part of the front of house team during the Food Festival and says: “This event was really good fun and it was nice to try lots of different food. I want to work in the bar industry when I leave college so this was good experience for me, using my hospitality skills to meet, greet and serve customers.
“I chose to come to the Career College when I left school as I’ve always been interested in hospitality. I’ve learnt so much here and love the fact that we work in a real restaurant while getting our qualifications. I feel really prepared for and confident about my future career.”
