Students with Peter Fortune MP
On Monday 13 January, four students from our Bromley Campus embarked on an inspiring visit to Parliament, providing them with an invaluable opportunity to deepen their understanding of democracy and political processes.

The visit not only allowed them to explore the inner workings of one of the world’s most iconic political institutions but also encouraged them to actively consider their roles in shaping the future of their community and country.

The students began their visit with an informative tour of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, where they gained insight into the day-to-day operations of the UK Parliament. They learned about the distinct roles of the two chambers, their significance in UK democracy, and how laws are debated and passed. In addition to the political education, the students were fascinated by the stunning architecture and history of the buildings.

One of the highlights of the trip was a special meeting with Peter Fortune, the Conservative MP for Bromley and Biggin Hill. Peter shared his personal experiences as a local representative and spoke about the importance of political engagement at all levels. The conversation then turned to a timely and thought-provoking discussion on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in society. The students had the chance to ask questions and explore how Parliament is approaching legislation to regulate the use of AI, particularly in areas like privacy, security, and ethics.

Throughout the visit, the students were encouraged to think critically about the ways in which they can influence future political decisions.

Overall, the trip to Parliament was an enriching and eye-opening experience for the students. They left with a deeper understanding of democracy, a greater appreciation for the history of British governance, and a strengthened desire to actively participate in shaping the political landscape.

This visit is part of London South East College’s commitment to providing students with real-world experiences that enhance their education and prepare them for future careers and civic involvement.
